Interestingly, even for Lululemon — often associated with leggings and tighter yoga outfits — sweatpants dominated its bestselling category within athleisure wear, accounting for 36% of sales on Tmall, JD.com, and Douyin.
Why are sweatpants dominating China’s athleisure market, and what can brands learn from this trend?
Comfort Is Key
Sweatpants offer a level of comfort that tight leggings cannot match. Chinese consumers, who often face demanding work schedules, are seeking more comfortable, relaxed clothing that balances both style and ease.
Earlier this year, the concept of ‘gross outfits 恶心穿搭’ went viral across Chinese social media. From sweatpants to slippers, these casual styles reflect the mindset of young workers who are prioritising their own comfort and well-being. In a culture where work can be exhausting, wearing simple, comfortable clothing is seen as a form of self-care.
This trend demonstrates how younger generations are learning to put their own feelings first, embracing fashion that allows them to feel more relaxed, even in the workplace.

Body Inclusivity
The loose fit of sweatpants caters to a broader range of body types. Consumers who may feel less confident in form-fitting clothing often gravitate toward sweatpants, which can also create a flattering silhouette by making legs appear longer and slimmer—a desirable effect for many.
Sun Protection
In China, long sweatpants are worn year-round, even in the summer, for UV protection. Thanks to their loose fit and breathable fabrics, sweatpants remain comfortable even on the hottest days, offering a practical alternative to shorts. Luxury brands that invest in fabric innovation and designs can further elevate their athleisure offerings.
Fashion Trend
Pairing sweatpants with slippers and light tops has become a popular look. This layered style communicates a polished yet effortless appearance — a key trend in today’s athleisure market.
Social media influencers and celebrities on platforms like Douyin and Little Red Book have played a significant role in popularizing athleisure trends, with sweatpants becoming a key style statement.
